ADD, ADHD, Focus, Learning, and
Productivity Problems; Uneasiness
Traditional Home Remedies for:
ADD, ADHD, Focus, Learning and Productivity Problems; Uneasiness.
It is critically important to note that old herbal medical texts do not list "hyperactivity" in their index, and new ones list it under "allergic responses." See Allergies Cough. Particularly for parents concerned about their children, it is important to understand that this is a response to environmental pollutions, including food additives and processed foods. The diet of a hyperactive child must be changed to a whole foods, vegetarian diet, with minimal dairy products and no wheat. What looks like hyperactivity is more likely a sugar fit. If this is a child who also had frequent ear infections and swollen glands, you can be certain the hyperactivity is an allergic reaction. Do not use amphetamine drugs on these children. Get the food additives and preservatives out of their diets.
Have your children drink Productivity Tea instead of: carbonated soft drinks; high fructose corn syrup laden juices.
Treatment should immediately concentrate on iron deficiency and heavy metal (lead, mercury, cadmium, copper, and manganese) excess. Eliminate wheat, corn and sugar from the diet. Their seeds are genetically modified organisms(GMO's) on a global scale. Avoid sodas and commercial toothpaste. Apple Cottage Herbal Toothpaste has dead sea salt, organic mint, organic sage, aluminum-free baking soda, kaolin clay, and myrrh. Exclude from the diet (in addition to all processed foods, and GMO's): almonds, apples, apricots, cherries, berries, peaches, plums, prunes, tomatoes, cucumbers, oranges, bacon, butter, chocolate, chili sauce, hot dogs, soy sauce, pork, milk, mustard, salt, soy sauce, sausage, black tea, and apple cider vinegar. Look for foods that may be causing any type of reaction. Find the patterns between outbreaks and food intake.
Emphasize a diet of legumes and wheat-free, gluten-free grains. Also include in the diet, locally grown vegetables and some fruits (not on the above list). Seventy four percent of hyperactive children exhibit in tests an abnormal reaction to sugar tolerance. Diet is the only controlling factor, and the problem cannot be solved any other way.

Addictions
One can be addicted to cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, shopping, gambling, overeating, love, or sex. Any of these requires intense mental and emotional work to overcome. Often they require outside intervention and assistance. Sip Adelaide's Addiction Herb Remedy tea, 4 or more cups per day, while you write in a journal about your struggles and emotions. This is an emotional problem, but it has a physical and hormonal base. You must overcome the physical draw to your addiction. Milk Thistle and Horsetail help your tissues recover. Scullcap assists in dulling the pain. Peppermint eases the anxiety. Writing in the journal will get to the root of the problem.

Traditional Home Remedies for:
Allergies / Cough
Allergies such as hay fever, dust, grasses, pollens, and animals are weaknesses of the immune system. Until the advent of processed foods, they were rare or virtually unknown in the population. They require commitment to a life of daily outdoor exercise, eating whole, unprocessed and organic foods, and learning your natural body rhythms and functions. Their symptoms can show up as runny nose, sneezing, coughing, or hives.
Until your body recovers, do whatever you can to stay away from whatever you are allergic to. There is often a threshold factor in allergic responses. The attack may not begin until it is "triggered" over the threshold level by exposure to multiple allergens, dust, respiratory infection, or excessive exercise. If you put filters on the air ducts in your house, keep the house clean of dust, stay away from animals and smells which cause you to react, and stay calm, you can prevent the most debilitating attacks. Spray the house after cleaning with a mixture of pure essential oils of eucalyptus, and juniper berry oil, in distilled water.
During periods of attack, munch on parsley and celery sticks. Eat wheat free, gluten free grains (amaranth, millet, and quinoa), bananas, almonds, peas, kidney beans, and lima beans. Cook with garlic and onions. Sprinkle your salads with sage. Add molasses and honey as sweeteners to whatever you can. Add 1 tsp spirulina powder to 4 ounces of your favorite juice and drink it on an as needed basis.
If you have no history of heart disease or high blood pressure, you may drink up to 3 cups of Ephedra tea daily during an attack. Do not use Ephedra extensively if you have high blood pressure, or if it makes you feel nauseous. In an emergency attack, a small amount of Ephedra can be used. (Ephedra is the basis for the drug ephidrene, commonly used in pharmaceutical allergy and asthma medications. It was used in folk remedies for 5,000 years before it was "discovered" by pharmaceutical companies in 1923.)
To stop allergic coughing symptoms, take 2 teacups of Mullein and Yerba Santa every 4 hours, along with 2 to 4 cups of Kava Kava and Vervain per day. (Whenever you are drinking a lot of different herbs in a tea, add a full teaspoon of each herb, making the tea stronger, rather than mixing the herbs together and using only one teaspoon per cup.) Drink two to three cups of the strong tea. If the coughing is extreme and uncontrollable, add 1 tsp Lobelia, 1 tsp Ephedra, and 1 tsp Valerian to a large tea ball. Steep 10 minutes. Sip slowly. Plan to take a nap afterwards. Do not do this any more than once a day for 3 or 4 days. Chew on Licorice Sticks between doses. Keep away from stressful situations. Rest until the episode is over. Be sure the allergen is not near you.
To stop allergic sneezing and sniffling, take Garlic and Capsicum 3 times a day. Sip a tea of Ginkgo and Yerba Santa whenever possible.
To relieve allergic hives and swelling, drink 3 cups of tea with 1 tsp Ephedra, 1 tsp Echinacea Angustifolia (NOT Purpurea unless it's given to a child less than 6 years old), 1 tsp Valerian, 1 tsp Mullein, and 1 tsp Goldenseal added. You may use the same herbs to brew all 3 cups of tea. Take a hot bath with 1 pound of baking soda or epsom salts added to the water. You may want to induce vomiting using 3 strong cups of Lobelia tea. After vomiting, drink a cup of Peppermint tea. Clear the toxins out of the blood with an enema every morning and a three day fast of just water and fruit juices. Apply moistened baking soda or epsom salts to the itching areas.
To relieve breathing problems: Mix together 4 tsp Ephedra, 1 tsp Licorice Root , 2 tsp Mullein, 1 tsp Yerba Santa, 1/2 tsp Ginkgo, 1/2 tsp Gotu Kola. Brew into a tea. If the sufferer is a child, make a syrup out of it by cooking 1 c tea with 1 c honey until the liquid boils down into a syrup. Cool and bottle the syrup and use it by teaspoonfuls. Use an amber glass sterilized bottle. Refrigerate or keep in a dark, cool place until needed. Don't make a habit out of taking this. A week is enough. Take a rest of 3 weeks before you take it again. Do not take St. John's Wort (it is a natural blood thinner) if you are taking any prescription drugs that are MAO inhibitors.
To disinfect the sick room or whole house where an allergic person lives: fill a spray bottle with distilled water and add pure essential oils of juniper berry and eucalyptus. Clean the room thoroughly first, then spray like an aerosol wherever the affected person will be. This will help to keep allergens settled and out of the nasal passages. Dust is often a trigger for allergic reactions.
To make a mouthwash for gargling: Put 1 heaping tablespoon of salt in 1 pint warm water. Add a dropperful of goldenseal and milk thistle tincture. Use as a gargle during hay fever season. Only use as needed.
To stop an acute asthma attack if medical assistance is not available: Quickly drink 3 cups of black coffee. Surprisingly, coffee is a specific medication for asthma.

Backache, Bodyache,
Headache (including migraine)
Traditional Home Remedies for:
Backache, Bodyache, Headache (including migraine)
BACKACHE
Back pain can be either acute, that is, coming on all of a sudden, or chronic, that is, it goes on and on daily. If you have lifted something too heavy, or injured your back in some way, you have an explanation for the acute back pain, and you can treat it as follows:
For acute back pain brought on by an injury: Bedrest for 2 to 3 days. Steep 2 tsp White Willow bark in 1 pint of water for 10 - 15 minutes. Drink 1 cup every 3 hours. Alternate heating pads with ice packs on the painful area. Have someone massage the painful area with a few drops of pure essential oil of eucalyptus in olive oil.
For acute back pain accompanied by abdominal pain, swelling, fever, or other symptoms: This suggests you may have some type of infection in organs, such as a kidney infection. If it is possible, you should consult a doctor. While waiting to see the doctor, add stinging Nettle leaf and Goldenseal leaf to your White Willow tea and follow the instructions shown above, but do not massage the area.
For chronic back pain: There is a definite and undeniable emotional component to chronic back pain. Strengthen the abdominal muscles by doing daily situps and crunches. Make yoga and stretching a part of your daily routine. Learn the acupressure points for your particular problem. Regularly have someone massage your back with pure essential oil of eucalyptus in olive oil. Learn to visualize yourself pain free. Make a strong tea of Joanne's Aches and Pains Herb Remedy. Take 2 to 3 cups of it when the pain bothers you. Lie down when you feel the pain, but don't stay lying down for more than a few hours at a time. Stretch gently, and never in a manner that makes the pain worse. Spend some time alone with your thoughts, and try to figure out what might be debilitating in your life.
Drink a lot more water every day. Solve constipation problems by drinking a strong brew of Cascara Sagrada. Look for specific food allergies. See Allergies. If the stomach also has gas and a sour taste or coated tongue is present, induce vomiting with 3 cups of strong Lobelia tea. Follow this with a cup of Peppermint tea. Take a hot foot bath with a tablespoon of mustard in it to draw blood from the head area. Along with this, put a towel dipped in cool water around the neck. Drink a cup of tea made of Joanne's Aches and Pains Remedy. After this, lie down in a place where fresh air is circulating.
Boil two quarts of water, turn off the stove, and add a dropperful of pure essential oil of eucalyptus to the water. Cover your head and the pot with a towel and breathe in the fumes. If the headache still continues, take an enema of Black Cohosh and Chamomile tea. If you are allergic to ragweed, substitute Peppermint for the Chamomile wherever it is used.

Bloating (Gas), Hangover

BLOATING, GAS
Bloating and water retention are often an indicator of an allergic response. See allergies, swelling response. Increase your intake of raw fruits and vegetables. Increase the amount of water you drink. Exercise gently daily and take hot baths with a few drops of essential oil of eucalyptus in them at least twice a week. Flush excess water from the tissues with a three-day fast. During your fast, eat only wheat free, gluten free grains and raw fruits and vegetables, plus 8 glasses of water per day. Also drink a strong tea of Parsley Leaf. Parsley pulls water out of the body. After the water is flushed out, remember to continue with at least 8 glasses of water per day. Begin watching your diet for foods that cause the swelling. Slowly add foods to your diet, one at a time, and record how you feel in the hours after eating. A food allergy or sensitivity can make you feel chronically ill for such a long time that you come to accept this feeling as normal. Most allergy sensitivities are a result of wheat, dairy, corn, soy, refined sugar, or peanut products. ALL food preservatives are high potential allergens. Allergies often kick in as a result of a combination of stressing factors. You may find that you are allergic to dust, but your allergic reaction occurs ONLY if you are still recovering from a bronchial infection, (for example). You may be allergic to milk, but only if it's hay fever season. Observing your feelings and body reactions carefully and personally will be the only method of finding the source of the allergen.
Of course, allergies trigger more forcefully in the presence of stress, so drink a cup of Kava Kava, St. John's Wort, and Blue Vervain tea to stay calm while you're analyzing the problem.
St. John's Wort is an MAO inhibitor (a natural blood thinner). Do not take it if you are taking prescription drugs that thin the blood.
HANGOVER, MORNING SICKNESS, MOTION SICKNESS, NAUSEA
Drink a strong brew of Tummy Tonic Herb Remedy tea. The tummy tonic contains fennel, ginger and peppermint. Fennel relieves gas. Ginger relieves nausea, motion sickness, morning sickness, and hangovers. Peppermint is uplifting and relaxes the stomach.

Traditional Home Remedies for:
Eye Problems:
Adjustment to light changes
Clarity of Vision
Focusing and muscle tone
Eyestrain
Irritation: stye or pinkeye
Contact Lens Soaking and Cleaning
(for rigid gas permeable lenses)
It is often said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. If you have eyestrain, press on the B2 acupressure point, which is at the upper ridges of the eye sockets close to the bridge of the nose. Take a tea of Eyebright, Bilberry, Feverfew, and Licorice. Increase the amount of carrots, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, sunflower seeds, oranges, grapefruits, and wheat free, gluten free grains in your diet.
The eyes are on the same body meridien as the Liver. When a dysfunction of the eye manifests, it is a result of a disorder in the way the liver processes and metabolizes the food we eat. To fix the eyes (and improve focus and muscle tone), you then have to strengthen the liver. The liver is strengthened through aerobic exercise, a cleansing diet of plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, and Eye Q Tea of Eyebright, Bilberry Leaf, Gotu Kola and Ginkgo. Drink 3 to 4 cups per day. Make 1 or 2 quarts at a time and store in refrigerator. Use the cooled tea as an eyewash to brighten eye clarity.
To make Eye Q tea: Pour 1 to 2 quarts of boiling water over 2 tsp of tea in a tea ball diffuser and steep 10 minutes. Sweeten with agave nectar or blackstrap molasses.
To make an eyewash / tea for eyestrain and clarity (Bright Eyes Tea): Mix Fennel, Eyebright, and Bilberry herbs in a bowl and place 2 tsp of the mix in a tea ball diffuser. Place the diffuser in a teacup. Pour boiling water over the diffuser and let steep 10 minutes. Cover the teacup with a small plate to steep. Let the tea cool to a warm temperature (NOT HOT!!!) Wet a washcloth in the warm tea and use as an eye compress. Use the warm tea water as an eyewash (in glass eyecups). Drink the remainder of the "Bright Eyes" tea after washing the eyes.
To make tea for arresting macular degeneration: Bring 1 quart of water to a boil and then simmer 2 tsp of Bilberry Berries in the water for 1 hour. Strain the berries and use them as compost. Drink the tea water. Let the leftover tea cool and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
To stop or retard the formation of cataracts: You must increase the antioxidants in your body, as well as increase the level of the amino acids glycine, glutamic acid, and cysteine. Eating beans, yellow fruits and vegetables, citrus fruits, and dark, green leafy vegetables is important. Drink a strong tea of Eyebright 3 times a day along with "Bright Eyes" tea. There is a higher incidence of cataracts in people with allergic skin rashes. See Allergies.
To stop pinkeye (conjunctivitis) or stye: Make a tea of Herbal Eyewash. Place 1 tsp of the herb mix in a tea ball diffuser in a pyrex measuring cup (4 cup capacity). Bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Pour the boiling water into the measuring cup and cover with a small plate. Let steep 5 minutes. Remove the tea ball. Set aside 1 cup of tea to drink hot. Then let the tea cool until it reaches a slightly warm temperature. Pour the tea into glass eye cups and wash eyes. Store the remaining tea in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
IMPORTANT!!! If there is an active infection, there may be a slight burning in the eyes the first time you wash. If the burning becomes intense then wash the eyes first with plain water. Then weaken the tea with water (2 parts water to 1 part tea) and try again.
(IMPORTANT!!! Do not use tap water if it has a high chlorine content. You will know by the smell. If it smells like a swimming pool then it has a high content and could be the source of the burning. Distilled water is the best water to use unless you have good well water or tap water.)
If the burning continues beyond the first few washes then consult your healthcare practitioner as soon as possible. Wash the eyes once in the morning and once in the evening after washing your face. Be sure to sterilize the eye cups well between uses. Do not touch your eyes directly. Use paper towels to dry your face. Do not reuse your cloth towels until you wash them in borax powder and until the pinkeye is completely gone. Pinkeye is extremely contagious. It usually takes about a week of washing daily to completely clear up pinkeye.
To Clean and Soak Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses: Make a tea of Herbal Eyewash. Place 1 tsp of the herb mix in a tea ball diffuser in a pyrex measuring cup (2 cup capacity). Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Pour the boiling water into the measuring cup and cover with a small plate. Let steep 15 minutes. Remove the tea ball. Then let the tea cool until it reaches room temperature. Pour the tea into the contact lens case and soak the lenses overnight. Store the remaining tea in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. The tea removes from the contact lenses: glue residues from scotch tape and packing tape; deposits from normal daily wear that fog and cloud the lenses. Rinse the lenses before replacing them into your eyes.

Traditional Home Remedy for
Insomnia
Be sure you have a regular sleep schedule, seven days a week. Don't change your sleep times on weekends and then try to readjust during the week. Smoking, alcohol, caffeine, and overeating all have the potential to disturb sleep patterns. Stresses and changes in routine all contribute to the problem. Don't use your bedroom as a place to work, argue with your partner, or eat. Spend an hour or two before bed quietly reviewing your life's stresses and deciding what to do. Make the decision, then go to bed. Try not to "sleep on it." Learn meditation, take a warm bath with lavender oil in the tub, and cuddle up happily with your partner. Have a cup of Restful Night Herb Remedy tea before bed. It contains valerian root, chamomile flowers, and fennel seeds. Some people are stimulated by Valerian but most are sedated. If you are stimulated by valerian, then chances are good that ginseng will sedate you. All you can do it try and see what works for you. Chamomile is calming. Fennel has a natural sweetness to it and adds to the flavor.

Pain is the body's alarm system. Be sure to look for the cause of the pain and remove it with Joanne's Aches and Pains Herb Remedy. It contains White Willow bark for minor aches and pains, Scullcap for more intense problems, and Feverfew for migraines.
St. John's Wort relaxes tension at the same time as dulling pain. Do not take St. John's Wort (it is a natural blood thinner) if you are taking any prescription drugs that are MAO inhibitors.Valerian produces a sedative effect in most people but some are stimulated by it. (Try it to see how it works for you.) Lobelia releases spasms.
Pain from injuries related to damaged bone and cartilage: Drink a tea of Bobby's Bone Tone Herb Remedy and soak the affected area in that tea during early stages of recovery. This remedy contains: Burdock root the herbal equivalent of glucosamine and chondroitin; Horsetail, also known as shavegrass, is used to heal connective tissue; Parsley, reduces swelling due to water retention; Pau D'arco,
a diuretic, and is used to treat backache; Echinacea, a cleansing herb to support filtering toxins by the lymphatic system and the liver.
Different people have different pain thresholds. What is excruciating pain to one person may be only a minor discomfort to another person. This is because the mind's associations impact the amount of pain we each feel. Pain has a tolerance level, similar to alcohol addiction. The more alcohol one drinks, the more one is able to drink before feeling the effects. The more pain one experiences, the more one is able to experience before noticing. Mind training is able to focus and divert pain in ways that appear almost supernatural. This is the philosophy in Lamaze childbirth training. It is also the meditative technique practiced in Eastern cultures for centuries. Practice mind training by drinking a tea of Peppermint and Kava Kava and Scullcap to help ease the pain. The peppermint is uplifting, Scullcap eases nerve pain and Kava Kava is a mood elevator.
To increase your pain threshold, sit quietly and focus on a simple object or the flame of a candle. Practice diverting your mind from the pain and visualizing yourself pain free. It may help to repeat a simple phrase over and over again (whatever comes into your mind at the time. Your mind, if occupied elsewhere, will discount the signal of pain and block it out. Be careful to ensure that you do not use this new-found pain-relieving ability to ignore valid signals of distress from your body.

Traditional Home Remedies for:
Sore Throat
Sore throat is an indicator or a precursor of many possible diseases and disorders, including measles, chronic fatigue, mononucleosis, strep infection, colds, allergy, laryngitis, and tonsillitis. When the sore throat first appears, you are on notice that you may be about to get really sick. Immediately take a day off work and rest in bed, and you may stave off more serious illness. Drink plenty of liquids, preferably water, vegetable juices, and herbal teas. Green tea with lemon juice and honey will be particularly helpful. Green tea has phenol in it, which is the ingredient in many throat sprays. Throw away your toothbrush as soon as a sore throat starts, so you don't reinfect yourself. After the sore throat is over, get another new toothbrush. Sleep with an extra pillow. Make a pot of boiling water and put pure essential oil of Eucalyptus in it. Breathe in the steam by putting a towel over your head and the pot and inhaling the steam. Get some natural throat lozenges that contain horehound and menthol (mint). Suck on a stick of Licorice herb. (Real herbal Chinese licorice, not candy.) Gargling with warm salt water, tea tree oil and clove oil is most likely to help if you have no cough. If you have a cough, the problem is deeper than gargling will reach. Put a warm cloth around your neck as a "throat rag". Throat rags for sore throats is a long-standing old time remedy.
If you are very serious about staving off a sore throat, then take a double dose of Garlic and Capsicum. Drink a strong brew of Sydney's Sore Throat Herb Remedy tea every 4 hours. Do this at the first sign of sore throat, and the expected following disease will become very aware it is unwelcome. This will make an extremely inhospitable environment for any bacteria or virus to take hold.
Sydney's Sore Throat Remedy contains Goldenseal, an herb with strong antibiotic properties. Do not take Goldenseal for more than a week at a time. Then, if necessary, resume after 3 weeks. Substitute Myrrh or Pau D'arco for the Goldenseal if you need to continue medication for more than a week.
To make a "throat rag": Make a warm tea of Pau D'arco, Slippery Elm, and Cloves. Soak a clean cotton cloth in the tea. Spread the cloth with a generous helping of crushed garlic. Wring it out and wear it around your neck while you have a sore throat. The garlic is completely necessary, so don't plan on running out to run a quick errand while you're wearing this. The medicine in garlic is called "allicin." It is extremely effective against the streptococcus bacteria. Rest in bed and drink Sydney's Sore Throat Herb Remedy tea.
To make "sore throat" syrup: Add 1 c honey to Sydney's Sore Throat tea and boil until a syrup forms. Cool and store in sterilized, amber glass bottles. Keep refrigerated. Take by teaspoonfuls as needed. Always remember children need smaller doses than adults. A child under 6 should take ¼ tsp. From 6 to 12, ½ tsp. From 12 - 17, ¾ tsp. Combining sore throat syrup with a throat rag and bed rest is the best treatment for children. Keep the child home from school at the first complaint of a sore throat. Early treatment is the key to preventing development of more serious problems.
